We have certainly come a long way since the days of written receipts and push button cash registers. Bar codes and bar code scanners have become a norm. In fact, you would be hard pressed to locate a store which doesn't have computerized point of sale equipment. However, there are many of us who do remember the old days. Prior to bar code scanners we would have to wait until our purchases were tallied on a receipt book. Then we had to wait for the clerk to check the tax chart to see what we were to be charged. Then we had to hand over the cash and wait for the appropriate change to be counted back to us.

The introduction of bar codes and bar code scanners has allowed us to shop at a faster rate. It also has cut down on human mistakes. No longer are we dependent upon the ability of the clerk at the check out counter to remember the price of stocked items. By simply running the item over a bar code scanner, the information is automatically recorded, total given and transactions are made instantly. When bar code scanners first hit the scene, they must have seemed like an answer to a prayer for a store owner. Bar code scanners let the owners know which items have been taken out of inventory. This in turn lets them know when an item needs to be restocked.

There are various types of bar code scanners today. Many are built into the counter. This is the common scanner which is found in the supermarket. Other scanners look like guns, while others look like pens. No matter the style of scanner, they all perform basically the same. Bar code scanners can be found in many different places. Many libraries have implemented bar code scanners to keep track of their inventory. Warehouses use them to keep track of their supplies, and a type of bar code scanner is used every time we do a transaction with a credit or debit card.

We have certainly come a long way in our business transactions. We are dependent upon point of sale equipment--and you would be hard pressed to find any young person working in the modern world who would be able to write a written receipt for grocery goods.
